The City of Lakeport is located on the northwest
shore of Clear Lake. Lakeport is the regional center of commerce and
governmental activity in Lake County and a major access point for recreational
boating on Clear Lake. State Highways 20 and 175 provide access from the west to
the Lakeport area. Lampson Field Airport is located less than two miles from the
south City limits, with a 3,700-foot lighted runway, aircraft fuel and service. Lakeport
was incorporated in 1888, but the history of Lake County's oldest town goes back
at least another 40 years to the Gold Rush era of the late 1840's. Miners
beading to and from the gold fields began passing through Lake County in 1847
and 1848. Many of whom returned at the conclusion of the Gold Rush to settle
permanently. The city's population in 1888 was 700 people. There
are six business centers in the Lakeport area, including the historic downtown
area which was designated a California Main Street Demonstration City in 1995.
The Lakeport area supports about 45 percent of the county's jobs. Business and
industry will find Lakeport provides a number of benefits and amenities,
including adequate and reliable services, a pro-business community, affordable
housing, and a variety of build-able sites.
The small friendly town of Kelseyville is a
community of people involved in the area businesses, schools, churches, service
groups and cultural activities. Members in the community take pride in what the
country town has to offer: historical sites, recreation, lodging, dining,
shopping and special events complemented by rural countryside and agricultural
lands. Kelseyville is the business center
for Big Valley, Lake County's thriving agricultural area and serves a population
of 9,000 people. The region encompasses the surrounding recreational and
residential areas of Buckingham, Clear Lake Riviera, Soda Bay and Finley.
Located in the Mayacamas Mountain Range with
elevations of 2,400 to 4,722 feet, Cobb is a "Four-Season Wonderland."
Winding one's way up to Cobb Mountain inspires a feeling of awe as the trees
become more majestic with each rise in elevation. This majestic forest of pine,
oak, fir, madrone and cedar is also a natural habitat for dogwood, redbud and
wild lilac. One of the last affordable
bedroom communities to the Sonoma/Napa valleys, the Cobb area has seen a
tremendous growth in the last few years. A one hour commute has made it possible
for many young families to purchase homes in the surrounding areas and many of
the older summer homes have been remodeled to accommodate year round living.
Parents are delighted to find that Cobb Elementary School is rated among the
highest in the state.
Nice and Lucerne are often referred to as
"the Switzerland of America" because of the terrain and steep Bartlett
Mountain range which resembles the Alps. These communities are on Highway 20 and
considered a part of the north shore of Clear Lake. Long
beautiful shorelines, shaded by large pepperwoods and giant oaks, have several
resorts, campgrounds, public beaches and harbors are favorite spots for
fisherman. In recent years, Nice and Lucerne have become a retirement,
recreational and agricultural center, with many fine residential developments.
Nestled in the valley between the Mendocino
National Forest mountains along Highway 20 at the north end of Clear Lake is the
small, days-of-yesteryear community known as Upper Lake. This is the gateway to
the 876,236-acre forest offering many outdoor activities. The are also includes
a large agricultural base including pears, walnuts, strawberries, apples, wild
rice and wine grapes. Upper Lake provides
opportunities to experience an old-fashioned Main Street atmosphere with antique
shops and art galleries featuring exquisite pieces in all mediums. Many new
businesses are filling the shops along Main Street featuring the works of
talented hand-crafters. Upper Lake offers restaurants, motel accommodations and
gas stations.
